Tips and Techniques
Keep It Simple!
Texpose: This allows the bait to be fished weedless.
Start by inserting a worm hook 1/4 in. into the tip of the head of the bait and allow it to come out of the bottom of the bait.
Slide the bait up the hook so the head is near the hook eye.
Rotate the hook and bring the hook up through the belly of the bait so the tip of the hook barely comes out of the back of the bait.
Texas Rig: This allows weight to be added near the head of the bait so it can be fished deeper. You can drag the bait or swim the bait deeper depending on the size of the weight.
Start by sliding a slip sinker up your line, point end away from your bait.
Next you can add a bead to you line. (This step is optional). Fish are attracted to clacking sounds.
Tie on your hook and Texpose the bait (see Texpose above).
Carolina Rig: Similair to the Texas Rig (see above), This allows weight to be added further away from your bait. This can be fished deep or shallow, primarily dragged on the bottom.
Start by adding a slip sinker to your line.
Next add a bead.
Then tie a barrel swivel to your line.
Next tie a length of line to the swivel. This line is called a leader and should have a breaking strength less than your main line. The leader can be 1 to 4 feet long.
Tie your hook to the end of the leader.
Texpose the bait (see above).
Drop Shot: Places the weight at the bottom of your line and the bait above the weight. Can be fished deep or shallow, vertically or horizontally.
Start by adding a barrel swivel to your main line (this helps prevent line twist).
Next tie on a length of line (leader) to the swivel. This leader should have a lower breaking strength than the main line. This leader can be 1 to 5 feet.
Tie on a Drop Shot Hook 18in. to 2ft. below the swivel. Use a Palomar knot allowing the hook point to point upward. Leave 1 to 3 feet of leader left below the hook.
Add a Drop Shot weight below the hook this can range from 3in. to 3 feet below the hook. (usually further away whe fished horizontally)
Nose hook the bait (usually a smaller profile bait).
